Through the “lolicon increase” in adult manga of the early 1980s, the term was adopted within the nascent otaku tradition to denote attraction to early bishōjo (cute girl) characters, and later to solely younger-wanting depictions as bishōjo designs grew to become extra assorted. In Japan, the time period denotes a broad spectrum of attraction between girls. Lolicon manga performed a job in attracting male fans to Comiket, an occasion initially dominated by ladies (ninety percent of contributors were female at its first run in 1975); in 1981, the variety of male and female contributors was equal. Lolicon, principally created by and for males, served as a response to yaoi (manga that includes male homoeroticism), largely created by and for ladies. While erotic, Azuma's manga was additionally viewed as humorous and parodic; only a minority of readers found his model erotic at first, however a big fan base soon grew in response to the alternative to pornographic gekiga that it represented.

(Image: https://live.staticflickr.com/2829/10679295283_2540936908.jpg) Alice in Wonderland-inspired work by Shinji Wada revealed within the June 1974 situation of the shōjo manga journal Bessatsu Margaret, where a male character calls Lewis Carroll a man with a “unusual character of liking only small kids” in an inside joke to grownup readers. Media scholar Chizuko Naitō views lolicon as reflecting a “societal need in a broader sense” for younger ladies as sex symbols in Japan (which she calls a “loliconized society”). Lolicon became a key phrase in debates after the 1989 arrest of Tsutomu Miyazaki, a serial killer of young women who was portrayed in media experiences as an otaku (see § History). Kodomo no Jikan, and Moetan as examples of collection which problem the distinction between moe and lolicon by means of use of sexual innuendo, commenting that they “satire the chaste sanctity of the moé phenomenon” and “poke enjoyable at viewers and the arbitrary delineations that viewers assert”. He describes the practice of preserving the two separated because the “ethics of moe”, or “responsibility of otaku”. Miyazaki was labelled as an otaku, and a picture of otaku as “socially and sexually immature” men, and for some as “pedophiles and potential predators”, was established for much of the public. The bishōjo character type moved from niche, otaku publications to mainstream manga magazines, and noticed explosive recognition in the decade with the rise of bishōjo games and Hentai Anime series corresponding to Sailor Moon and Hentai Anime Neon Genesis Evangelion, which pioneered media and merchandising based mostly on fan affection for their female protagonists.
